🇬🇧 We foreground unconventional and uncompromising creative practices that take shape on the margins of the dominant art world. We invite you to engage with cinematic narratives devoted to creators whose imagination unfolds beyond normative conventions, established cultural codes, and institutional frameworks — a creativity aligned with countercultural impulses: spontaneous and raw, at times unpremeditated, yet marked by inner coherence and profound personal intensity.

Zaprezentujemy także odnalezione w polskich archiwach dokumenty, m. in. zrealizowany w 1981 roku, zapomniany film o Januszu Bernasiewiczu (1908–1984) – twórcy z kręgu Habitants-Paysagistes z Jaworzni. O nim, jego ogrodzie i zachowanym dziedzictwie opowie etnograf dr Krzysztof Karbownik – kierownik Działu Badań Etnograficznych Parku Etnograficznego w Tokarni. Będzie to jeden z dwóch wykładów multimedialnych pod wspólnym tytułem „Sztuka spoza mapy. Jak ratować to, czego nikt nie chce”. Drugim będzie pokaz dokumentacji wideo oraz komentarz Bożeny Olszewskiej z Muzeum Etnograficznego im. Marii Znamierowskiej-Prüfferowej w Toruniu. Kierowniczka tamtejszego Działu Estetyki i Sztuki opowie o twórcy z kręgu Habitants-Paysagistes – Wiktorze Węglerskim (1909–1988).

II Edition — Program under the theme: “Maps, Paths, Beacons”

🇬🇧 The second edition of BRUdoc takes place under the theme “Maps, Paths, Beacons” — a metaphor for creative wandering, the search for life’s meaning, and spiritual and artistic journeys, as well as real expeditions undertaken by researchers and documentarians to the peripheries — off the beaten track — in search of what remains undiscovered. The festival aims to create alternative “maps of art” and to explore the spaces, directions, and symbols used by outsider artists, as well as the future of this type of creation.

This year, several premieres will be presented. We will screen the latest film by Philippe Lespinasse on Michel Thévoz, the first director of the Collection of Art Brut in Lausanne, and Danilo Proietti’s film on Jean-Luc Johannet — a creator who loves nature and myths, a proud anarchist, convinced that “the right angle is to geometry what fascism is to politics.” We also wish to share with the audience our newest film, Mechanics of Thought, completed in February 2026. This is the seventh short film in the DIFFERENT cycle, produced at the Płock Centre of Culture and Art.

We will also present documents recovered from Polish archives, including a forgotten 1981 film about Janusz Bernasiewicz (1908–1984), a creator and landscape inhabitant of Jaworznia. His work, his garden, and preserved heritage will be discussed by ethnographer Dr. Krzysztof Karbownik, head of the Ethnographic Research Department at the Ethnographic Park in Tokarnia. This will be one of two multimedia lectures under the common title: “Art Off the Map: How to Save What No One Wants.” The second will consist of a video presentation and commentary by Bożena Olszewska of the Maria Znamierowska-Prüfferowa Ethnographic Museum in Toruń. Head of the Department of Aesthetics and Art, she will present the creator and landscape inhabitant Wiktor Węglerski (1909–1988).

Cel festiwalu

Festival Objective

🇬🇧 Beyond the film screenings, the festival aims to draw attention to a little-known European cultural heritage — irregular heritage — created “off the map” of the main currents of research and interest in creativity and artistic practice. We present not only artists but also individuals, collectives, and organizations actively promoting independent artistic practices and safeguarding places and legacies associated with creative work outside the mainstream art world.

Wydarzenia dodatkowe

Całość spotkania będzie moderować Roberta Trapani – historyczka sztuki i członkini stowarzyszenia Patrimoines Irréguliers de France (Nieoczywiste Dziedzictwo Francji).

Complementary Events

🇬🇧 One associated event will take the form of a ROUNDTABLE on the subject of so-called “participatory workshops,” as defined by Michel Thévoz. The meeting is initiated by Katia Furter, project and development coordinator at the Fondation Guignard in Switzerland, a partner of the festival.

Invited participants include: Anne-Françoise Rouche — Belgian art critic, curator, and writer, affiliated with La “S” Grand Atelier in Vielsalm (Belgium); Alicja Debergut — President of the Friends’ Association Dom na osiedlu in Łódź, which runs the ODLOT Atelier and Gallery; and Darek Zdrojewski — director for twenty-five years of the STO05 workshop at a specialized educational institution for people with disabilities in Skierniewice. This meeting will provide an opportunity to exchange experiences and best practices, as well as to discuss challenges and risks related to the operation of workshops and institutions supporting creators with disabilities. The discussion will be moderated by Roberta Trapani, art historian and member of the association Patrimoines Irréguliers de France. Simultaneous translation will be provided.

The festival will open in the granary of the Mazovian Museum in Płock, where the exhibition “13 Niepokornych / Rebels / Rebelles” from the ART BRUT AK collection of Andrzej Kwasiborski will be on display. Among the works are those created by protagonists of the films presented during this edition of the festival.

The festival will conclude with an excursion. As last year, we will visit the Museum of Kujawy and Dobrzyń Land in Włocławek and its collection of works by Stanisław Zagajewski.

Participation in all events is free. Films are subtitled in Polish, French, and English and also feature audio description. Consecutive translation will be provided during meetings with the creators.
